Prospect of peace in Afghanistan

Afghan and Taliban negotiators in Qatar finally reached an agreement on intra-Afghan peace talks’ procedure a few days ago. The agreement was reached after almost three months of very lenghty and even tense negociations. Experts believe that the upcoming process is going to take much longer than the first phase. But why did this process take so long? What are the Taliban looking for?

Afghan expert Ahmad Faiz zareer says the Taliban are seeking to form an interim government with the support of Pakistan.

He told Asia News Agency that from the Taliban’s point of view, some political currents in Afghanistan are not so opposed to forming an interim government.

The Afghan expert also says that the increase in terrorist attacks in Afghanistan will have its positive and negative effects on the outcomes of the Doha peace.

Referring to the hand grenade explosion that occured close to a vehicle carrying Russian diplomats in Kabul a few days ago, he said the attack on Russian diplomats in Kabul was undoubtedly planned and carried out with the aim of discrediting Russia’s position in the Afghan peace process. The countries being actively involved in Afghanistan are concerned about Russia’s presence and cooperation with the Afghan people after the withdrawal of NATO and US forces.

The expert added that the enemies of the people of Afghanistan and Russia tried to increase the sensitivity of the Russian government towards the Taliban and to diminish Russia’s significant role in the Afghan peace process.
