Putin congratulates Eid al-Fitr

The Russian President Vladimir Putin in a message on the occasion of the Eid al-Fitr in the country said “the Muslims in different parts of Russia play a significant role in creating harmony and convergence among the various ethnics in Russia.

According to the message released today (Tuesday) in the Kremlin’s website, “the Russian Muslims having multi-century spiritual, religious, historical and cultural traditions, they celebrate Eid ul-Fitr and by enjoying its achievements, they help to fellow human beings in need”.

“Today, we witness the Russian Muslim community carry out a wide range of activities such as building mosques, Islamic centers, the revival of Islamic Academy of Sciences, and the establishments of universities and seminaries”, Putin added.

Putin further added that the useful and effective activities of the Muslim communities will have the entire nation’s support, and will help to maintain peace and civil coexistence in the country.

The Eid al-Fitr prayers today in about 7000 mosques and prayer centers throughout Russia, especially in Moscow and St. Petersburg in the center of the country were held. The prayers were also held in predominantly Muslim republics of Caucasus and Volga regions, with the participation of hundreds of thousands of people.

The Sunni Muslims who make up about 25 million people of the followers of Islam religion in Russia, according to the country’s Mufti Council, celebrated the occasion of Eid ul-Fitr today (Tuesday).

Russia’s Shia community has also announced tomorrow (Wednesday) as the first day of Eid.
