The closure of the Taliban representation in Doha is an internal affair of Afghanistan, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters.

“The Russian Federation considers the issue of further functioning, or the closure of the office of the Taliban movement in Doha, the internal affair of Afghanistan,” Zakharova said, answering journalists’ question on the relates of Russia to the prospect of closing the mission.

She recalled that the office was primarily created as a platform for establishing contacts between the official Kabul and the Afghan armed opposition as part of efforts to launch a national dialogue.

“Unfortunately, in this direction, its activities did not bring any significant results, moreover, some countries used this platform to solve their purely internal tasks,” the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

“So, the US was negotiating with it the Taliban movement to exchange an American soldier for five Guantanamo detainees,” Zakharova pointed out.
